How a 75 year old granny who had only been playing poker for 1 week beat 5 of the worlds best poker players (with a combined single game winnings of $230,000 between them!!!)
In one week Ann learnt the skills to become a poker master, in this website we have analysed how Derren did this based on the video and his book, we have created a Free five step program that anyone can follow to become as good at poker as Ann became. This site is not an official Derren Brown site, and the poker guide above has been written and is based on the above TV show Derren did along with physiological tricks in Derrens book and articles written on the channel 4 website. We have also used relevant NLP and other physiological references to help make this guide as accurate as possible. If you have any comments or other poker tips please feel free to post them in the comments section at the bottom of this page.
Step One: The first thing you need to do is learn the basic rules of poker. Its very important at this stage not to get to hung up on the rules. The key is at this stage not to let the rules get in the way of the physiological techniques we want you to pick up on. For a quick explanation of the rules of poker (Texas holdem is the most common game so the rules relate to that) along with how the game is played please see our HOW TO PLAY guide.
Step Two: Now we will develop your skills at working out what card a person is holding. In order to get started and to give you some practise at learning how to read unconscious signals. People have a habit for giving unconscious signals away when they are thinking of something in particular or trying to conceal something. What we will do is try to explain what the most common patters are and how you can spot them, then with a friend you can practise some simple exercises to familiarise yourself with the skills.Everybody is different and its important to understand that such-and-such a behaviour dose not necessarily means the person is telling a lie or thinking of card X.
The secret is to watch people closely, keeping your wits about you and following their mental processes as closely as you can in your own mind. Look for their patterns and see where they fall down. Watch for an answer that breaks the rules – the odd one out will be the lie or the card they are thinking of.Some of the ways to spot that some one is breaking the rules are by looking for things like bringing the hand up to the face, like to stroke the chin or touching the nose. Or by closely looking at their eye movements, if people are thinking of visual information to answer a question, their eyes will move up (this is how they retrieve mental pictures).
This is done unconsciously and reliably.Once you know this, you can look for the instance when they don’t look up in the same way or perhaps they look to other side or perhaps they maintain eye contact with you when they would normally do otherwise. Most people imagine that we maintain eye contact when we tell the truth and break it when we lie. This is generally not so.The majority of people will maintain eye contact when lying, because they don’t need to retrieve information from their minds and, therefore, don’t need to move their eyes. At another level, they are eager to appear sincere, and so consciously decide to keep looking at you.Now you know what to look for sit down with a friend and have them think of a card and then have them say a list of cards and try to use your skills to work out which one they are thinking of. With a bit of practise and using your intuition then you will find you quickly get good at this. Step Three: We have all the basics now, what we need to do now is condition your mind so you are in a state where you are convinced of winning. We would recommend recording this and listening to it just to help you get into the correct state. This is a way that you can use to help create that state of mind where you feel total confidence and openness at your ability to read the unconscious signals people giveaway when playing poker.Start by visualising yourself at a professional poker match, sitting there in a very confident manner. This should be dissociated (such as on a TV or movie screen, we want to create an ideal internal representation that you will be drawn to rather than one you feel you already have).
When you are visualising this imagine you look like a million dollars, full of confidence and you are also totally relaxed and alert. All the other players cant help but unconsciously communicate what they are holding, intuitively you can feel what it is they are feeling. The harder they try to cover up their unconscious signals the easier and more obvious the signals become to you. You are totally relaxed and feel unstoppable. This feeling of power and ease at which you can pick up on there communications on an unconscious level gives you a real feeling of confidents and courage in the fact that you will win.Now make this image full colour and increase the brightness so that it becomes incredibly strong and vivid.Take away any border that may be there and make it panoramic. Add sound to it and make the voices loud and crystal clear. Relax and revel in the brilliance of your confidence, ability and game play.
Now turn down the colour and darken the image, then push it further away so that it gets really small. Then when its really small imagine yourself walking up to the poker table then, wooosh make the small dark image really big and bright and feel the relaxed feeling of power you have at the ability to read all of the unconscious signals that everyone is giving off at the table.Let the image become really bright and flow over you, so you feel it all right to your bones. Now open your eves for a few seconds and feel that feeling of power and control. Then close your eyes and repeat the prose’s four or five times, do this really quickly so that the image is really fast this way it has the best impact. Step Four: For the next week you need to practise the rules for five or ten minuets, just so you’re familiar with them. We would also recommend playing a few games just to get used to it, see our FREE PRACTISE SITES guide if you want a few good poker sites to practise your skills on.
Step Five: Now we need to develop your skills for reading a bluff, and keeping a poker face. Using the skills you learned in step two and step three we are going to home your skills. When someone has a Strong hand they are going to try to appear weak and if they have a weak hand then they are going to try to appear strong, so by revisiting step three to get your heighten receptivity and using the skills we developed in step four we are going to do a few more exercises.
We will be using your new heightened receptivity to guess whether they are bluffing or not, we will be practising this by guessing weather a card is high or low.A card is identified as high if it is eight up to ace or low.Get a friend to pick up the pack and look at you, they are then to look at the card and say whether it’s a high card or a low card deliberately bluffing every now and then. You are to look at there unconscious signals and decide if they are bluffing or not by saying whether you think it’s a high card or not.
The high cards are then placed on one pile and the lows on another, when you reach the end of the pack you can then turn over the lies and see how you did.The key is to keep practising and developing your skills, in a very short time you will find that you can get very good at this. For further reading on unconscious communication and spotting lies and giveaway tells I would highly recommend reading part five pages 219-246 of Derren Browns book Tricks of the Mind. Well that’s it; you just need a bit of practise and the confidents to know it works. To get familiar with the rules and game play of poker we would recommend playing a few free games online. Then you will be ready to apply the physiological aspects in face-to-face games and start winning some serious matches. We have found several sites online that offer free or very cheep poker games, this can be a very good way of getting used to the game. We hope you find them useful and good luck applying all the principles we have taught.
This site is not an official Derren Brown site, and the poker guide above has been written and is based on the above TV show Derren did along with physiological tricks in Derrens book and articles written on the channel 4 website. We have also used relevant NLP and other physiological references to help make this guide as accurate as possible. If you like this guide and want to learn more about Derren and the fantastic things he dose please feel free to click on any of the pictures below to find out more about the DVDs and book he has written.
I have tried to make the site as interactive as possible so anyone can post their thoughts or opinions to help others. I hope you find it usefull and good luck your poker playing.
