How To Play Poker
The rules of poker are relatively simple, it is important that you have a basic grasp of the rules but dont get too hung up on them. Remember we are learning the psychology of reading the other persons body language and telltale signals in order to work out when to bet. A basic understanding of the rules is important but not as important as understanding and practising the physiological aspects.
Ok so here is the basics: Poker uses a standard pack of 52 cards. (Some variant games use multiple packs or include the jokers.) The cards are ranked from high to low: Ace, King, Queen, Jack, 10, 9, 8, 7, 6, 5, 4, 3, 2. There are four suits, spades, hearts, diamonds and clubs with no suite been higher than the other. All players are dealt a hand at the start of the game and at the end of each round the player with the highest hand wins. Some variations have Wild Cards that can take on the rank or suit that the holder desirers, this is usually not the case unless agreed upon at the start of the game.
The picture below illustrates the poker hand rankings with 1 been the most valuable hand and 10 been the least.

Ok now we know the basic poker hands lets go over how the game is actually played. To start to play each player has to place an anteĀ into the pot, each player is then dealt five cards. The object of the game is to win the pot and this is done by been the highest hand that has not folded at the end of the hand.
When you place your ante and have been dealt your cards the game is played clockwise, each time it comes to your turn you have three choices as to what to do:
1) Call: This is what you do if you want to see everyones cards. To do this you need to match what has been bet sins your last bet. E.g. you bet 10 on your last go and someone else bet 15 you would have to put in 15.
2) Raise: This is done if you want to increase the stakes, typically if you have a good hand or you think your opponent is bluffing. To do this you need to match what the last bet was and increase it by whatever amount you want. E.g. you bet 10 on your last go and someone else bet 15 to raise you would put in anything over 15.
3) Fold: This is done if you have a week hand and do not want to play this hand. This can be a good way not to lose your money if you have a particularly bad hand.
Well thats pretty much how poker is played, its not very complicated and you can pick it up very quickly if you play a few games. We would recommend playing a few free games online just to get to understand and feel at ease with the game. Then you will be ready to apply the physiological aspects in face-to-face games and start winning some serious matches.
